NEWS ARTICLE: Hobbs Football Players Team Up With Kids Getting Bullied
On my unit, myself and some of the other senior precepting staff have stepped up and taken new nurses who have had some difficulty with bullying, under our collective Nightingale wings.
We look out for great and appropriate assignments.
We have ourselves assigned in their pod.
We check in frequently to see how they are doing.
We invite and engage them in impromptu learning opportunities.
We have meal breaks together.
We encourage meals together within the staff.
We intervene and interface in real-time events of bullying.
We encourage staff to approach us with issues regarding new staff or new graduate nurses or students so we can evaluate the complaints, situations and brainstorm resolutions that will address the issues and respond to both sides.
The OUTCOME HAS BEEN FANTASTIC!
Our new nurses are more engaged than ever, transitioning out of orientation easier, and are socializing easier into our groups.
It has made for happier staff all around.
I don't believe there is a place for bullying in a profession that focuses on caring for others.

Nurses have the unique privilege to have a backstage pass to our patients' and families' journeys. In the process, we teach, listen, clean up things only your mother or a toxic waste company would touch, and love to wake up doctors in the middle of the night.
And hopefully, we inspire and share our wisdom along the way.
